BLOG 271: “LOVE WAS…”

This poem come to me at 1.a.m. in a sleepy, messy jumble of words and emotions. And that’s more common than you think.

This poem was inspired by one of my favourite movies – As Good As It GetsIt’s a Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt masterpiece. If you have seen the movie, you’ll know what scene I’m referring to.

Let’s just say Melvin Udall got me thinking. This is “Love Was”. I hope you like it.

Inspired by “As Good As It Gets’

LOVE WAS…

stumbling around in the dark trying to find the light switch.
It was carpet burns on naked skin.
It was broken promises and the secrets in between.

Love was running to you in the middle of the night, and running ever since.
It was the candle flickers in the reflection of your eyes,
and yes, it was the dress you wore last Friday night.

It was Stevie Nicks on the radio.
It was a bottle of wine and one glass.
It was a bottle of wine and two glasses.

Love was dancing in the summer rain.
It was folded up photographs.
A forest fire burning a path to her.

Love was sleepwalking away from the pain of
warm bed sheets, cold bed sheets,
and the thought of another love scene.

Love was in the electricity of your kiss.
It was your favourite lipstick on your favourite coffee mug.
Love was envying the same coffee mug.

It was your favourite line of poetry,
and the way you spoke your favourite line of poetry.
Love was between the lines of all the poetry.

Love was your love of candles, songs from years ago.
It was the lamp light instead of chandeliers
and watching you sweep your hair behind your ears.

Love is the torn-up pieces inside of me.
It’s in all the scars, the burns, the wreckage.
Love is everything I wanted us to be.

And everything hurts as I crawl around in the dark,
still trying to find the light switch.
That really is as good as it gets.
