BLOG 247: ‘ALCOHOLIC WINTERS’

This poem is one of my favourite pieces. I wrote this during my time at university – my second year, I believe – and it features in my debut collection Wallflower. This is ‘Alcoholic Winters’. I hope you guys like it. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below as I always love to hear what you guys think.

Wallflower is a journey through self-discovery to the realisation of the world around you. It is a greeting to those with a fear of belonging, an invitation to outsiders looking in, warm hugs to anyone who has ever loved and lost. A collection of twenty-one poems, brought to you by a fistful of passion from a chaotic mind.

Alcoholic Winters

The snow has been drinking.
An alcoholic winter
relapsed from sober times.
Cold air can scar your eyes.

I love the way they see
the world like the water
beyond the ice. In bed,
you explain the little things

like life. The big things
like tomorrow’s breakfast.
Pancakes in syrup,
and did I lock the door?

And right before you
clock out for the night,
you lock your fingers
into mine, and we

toss and turn into love,
stroking spines in
November.
An alcoholic winter.
